Cosmic rays and volcanoes

Throughout human history, volcanoes played a significant role in our civilization, through their catastrophic power. We humans always felt and were defenseless against these powers of nature.

New scientific data claim that some volcanic eruptions are caused by dramatic increase of cosmic rays (electrically charged particles that arrive to our planet from space). To be more precise it has been noted that volcanoes with silica-rich and highly vicious magma are very sensitive to cosmic ray fluctuations.

Muons from cosmic ray contribute to nucleation of supersaturated magma (like in a bubble chamber) via ionization loss. This nucleation can lead to exsolution of H2O in the silica reach magma, thus leading to catastrophic volcanic eruption.

According to scientific publications, it possible that the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo that took place in 1991, was caused by such a dramatic increase of cosmic radiation which was also assisted by typhoon Yunya.

It is also noted that past ice-ages was triggered by multiple volcanic explosions which were triggered by increased cosmic ray flux due to a near by supernovae explosions.
